Description

In an FID detector, hydrocarbons are ionized in a hydrogen flame. The high polarization voltage across 2 electrodes creates an electrostatic field.

This causes the negative carbon ions and the positive hydrogen ions to move to the opposite electrodes, creating an electron flow proportional to the hydrocarbon concentration.
